The Story of Janmashtami

Hindu mythology states that on Janmashtami, Lord Krishna, the son of Devaki and Vasudev and the eighth avatar of Vishnu was born with the duty of defeating Kansa, the demon king of Mathura, who also happened to be Devaki's brother.

A prediction that promised Kansa's destruction by their eighth child led her to jail her sister and her husband with the intention of eradicating their children. Sadly, Kansa was able to eliminate six of their kids.

Nevertheless, the unborn child magically moved from Devaki's womb to Princess Rohini's during her seventh pregnancy, Balrama. Then, after the birth of their eighth child, Krishna, the whole palace went into deep sleep. This made it possible for Vasudeva to save the infant, who was then brought to Nand Baba and Yashodha's Vrindavan residence.

After that, Vasudeva went back to the palace and gave Kansa a female in place of the infant. She changed into Durga to warn Kansa of his impending doom when he tried to hurt the kid. Thus, Janmashtami is a celebration of Lord Krishna's birth.

Why is Janmashtami celebrated in India?

Devotees rise early on Janmashtami, bathe in the morning, put on new clothes, and maintain a fast. They pray to Lord Krishna in an attempt to win his favor. Temples are exquisitely decked and illuminated, while homes have decorations with flowers, diyas, and lights.

Since Mathura and Vrindavan are thought to be the birthplace and early years of Lord Krishna, these temples throw the most extravagant and colorful festivals. Raslila is performed by devotees to honor Krishna's love for Radha and to act out incidents from his life. Given that Krishna was born at midnight, it is customary to bathe and set an idol of the young god in a cradle at that fortunate hour.

Significance of Janmashtami

This is an important day since it marks the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, who is considered to be Vishnu's eighth avatar. On this day, devotees of Lord Krishna swarm temples to offer their respects and ask for his blessings.

Lord Krishna is adored and much loved by his devotees, who see him as a representation of divinity, justification, and love. They are motivated to live by the precepts of dharma (righteousness), karma (activity), and bhakti (devotion) by his life and teachings.
