Nirjala Ekadashi - 18th June 2024 - LifeGuru

Nirjala Ekadashi is a special day celebrated by Hindus, particularly those who follow the Vaishnavism tradition. It falls on the eleventh day of the waxing and waning lunar phases, known as Ekadashi in the Hindu calendar.

What makes Nirjala Ekadashi unique is that it's observed without consuming even a drop of water, unlike other Ekadashi fasts where some food or water may be allowed. This rigorous fasting day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism, and it is believed that observing this fast with sincerity brings immense spiritual merit and blessings.

Rituals of Nirjala Ekadashi 2024

Since the word "nir-jala" means "without water," this ekadashi fast is conducted without consuming any food or water. Nirjala Ekadashi is the hardest and most revered of all the ekadashis. Completing this vrat with complete dedication and austerity is the most rewarding and equal to observing all other ekadashi vrats throughout the year.

From the sunrise of the ekadashi tithi to the sunrise of the dwadashi tithi, the Nirjala Ekadashi fast lasts for a whole day. It is advised that anyone who are ill in any way or who are taking medicine not to follow the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. Partial fasting is permitted for certain devotees since their commitment to the Lord is more important than adhering to the rigorous fasting guidelines.

On the tenth day of the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat, a rite known as "Sandhyavandanam" is performed. The observer eats one meal (without rice) before dusk after concluding this prayer. After that, the fast lasts the entire day of Nirjala Ekadashi. On the twelfth day, after worshiping Lord Vishnu and giving food to the Brahmins, the fast comes to an end.

Offerings to their lord include Tulsi leaves, flowers, fruits, and delectable treats. In the evening, dhoop and incense sticks are used to worship the exquisitely decked statue of Lord Vishnu.

On this day, it is considered auspicious to read "Vishnu Sahastranaam" and other Vedic mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Giving away clothing, food, water, and other necessities to the underprivileged and destitute on Nirjala Ekadashi is a good deed.

The Story of Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi is named after a devout sage named Bhimasena, who was a steadfast devotee of Lord Vishnu. Legend has it that Bhimasena was unable to observe the regular Ekadashi fasts due to his inability to fast without water. To overcome this, he observed a strict fast on Nirjala Ekadashi, abstaining from both food and water. Pleased with his unwavering devotion, Lord Vishnu granted him the same merit as observing all the Ekadashi fasts throughout the year, hence making Nirjala Ekadashi one of the most significant fasting days in Hindu tradition.

Why is Nirjala Ekadashi celebrated in India?

For Hindus, Nirjala Ekadashi also called Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi is a holiday of immense spiritual significance. Nirjala Vrat translates to "the fast is observed without food or drink." On Dwadashi Tithi, devotees are only permitted to drink water after breaking their fast. One of the strictest and holiest fasts is the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. Many devotees offer prayers to Lord Vishnu during this fast, which they observe with tremendous dedication and devotion.

Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi

One of the Hindus' most fulfilling ekadashi practices is the Nirjala Ekadashi. This auspicious ekadashi bestows wealth, happiness, longevity, and salvation. The renowned saint "Vyas" revealed the significance of Nirjala Ekadashi. It is thought that those who observe Nirjala Ekadashi vrat receive the combined virtues of all other ekadashis.

To reap the rewards all at once, devotees who are unable to observe the remaining 23 ekadashis of the Hindu calendar could observe the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. Compared to visiting Hindu pilgrimage sites, it is more sacred. Because Nirjala Ekadashi falls before the monsoon, it aids in the body's purification. Another common misconception is that the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat observer continues to practice after death.
