This is the tale of Hema Mali, a gardener, Yaksha, and his stunning wife, Swarupavati. Hema Mali was employed by Kuvera, the Alakapuri King, who was a dedicated follower of Lord Shiva. Hema Mali's responsibility was to collect flowers from Manasarovar Lake and deliver them to the king so that Lord Shiva might be worshipped every day. But he was quite enamored with his wife, so one day he neglected his responsibilities and spent time with her.

As so, he was unable to present flowers to King Kuvera for the puja. To find out why Hema Mali was missing and not showing up, the king dispatched one of his messengers. The messenger discovered that Hema Mali was not fulfilling his responsibility of gathering flowers and presenting them to the monarch, but rather was spending time with his spouse. He went back to the palace and told the king that his beautiful and magnificent wife was the cause of his carelessness. It was mandated that Hema Mali appear in court.

Despite his requests for mercy, the monarch condemned him to white leprosy and forced him to live apart from his spouse. Hema Mali contracted white leprosy as soon as he was banished from the palace. After years of wandering through the wilderness, he eventually arrived at Sage Markandeya's ashram. The wise Markandeya was told the entire story. The sage advised Hema Mali to observe Yogini Ekadashi vrat in order to be freed from the curse and the harmful sickness. Hema Mali followed instructions, kept the fast, and transformed back into a Yaksha, a divine being. As a result, he could spend the remainder of his life contentedly with his wife.
